UK photography retreats

Focus on your photography, away for a weekend

Two to four-day, small-group residential photography workshops and photography retreats built entirely around your photography — visit the best spots in each area, timed for the best light, with as much one-to-one tuition as you need.

Hotel accommodation, breakfast and travel between locations are all included, so you can focus on the photography and relax in the evenings. My teaching style is honest, patient and friendly, and every workshop is suitable for all levels of experience.

Alan approaches photography as an art — an art that is mediated by technology, but nonetheless an art.

Much of the workshop involved developing artistic appreciations of the landscape. Technical questions were certainly addressed, but the core of the workshop was concerned with how to best represent the beauty that we saw. The experience of watching the day break on a beautiful Welsh beach would have been worth the price of admission.

Back in London we spoke with someone who grew up on Anglesey. When we told him where Alan had taken us, he said that these were the places he would have gone. You will not be disappointed.

Is a residential workshop for me?

Most people arrive with one of these in mind — find yours below

This sounds like me…Where we’d start
I want a focused weekend away to fast-track my landscape workA 2 to 4-day residential — intensive tuition in one area, the quickest way to step up
I’ve been on courses or day workshops with Alan and want to go furtherThe natural next step for regulars — more time, better locations, deeper one-to-one tuition
I just want to book the odd trip when one suits meAd-hoc is fine — book any single residential that fits your diary, no commitment to a series
I’m not sure I’m ready for a multi-day stay awayStart with a 2-day weekend — the gentlest way in, and you can build up from there
I worry I’m not fit enough for the walking involvedLocations are chosen with easy access in mind — tell Alan your needs and the pace is set to suit you
I think I’m too much of a novice to keep upYou’re exactly who these suit — groups capped at four, all levels, no one left behind
I don’t think my camera or gear is good enoughIt’s about seeing, not kit — any camera with manual control is fine, and Alan advises on what (if anything) is worth adding
I want a specific region — coast, mountains or a particular areaChoose by location from the workshops below — each is built around that area’s best spots
I’ve been to this area before but didn’t get the shots I wantedAlan’s advice and experience help you read the conditions and get the best from a place you already know

Alan Ranger teaching photography to clients on a workshop

Learning with someone who does this every day

I’ve spent more than 15 years teaching people photography — one-to-one, in groups, in the field, and on stage at international events. A residential workshop is simply the most immersive version of that: small groups, the best locations, and my full attention pitched exactly at your level.

No two photographers arrive the same, so no two workshops are the same.

Not sure a residential is for you?

Two worries come up again and again, so let me answer both honestly:

“I’m not experienced enough.” You don’t need to be. Groups are capped at four, all levels are welcome, and you get as much one-to-one guidance as you need — we start wherever you are and go at your pace.

“I can find these locations myself.” You can — but a residential takes away the planning, the timing and the guesswork. You arrive, and everything from light to logistics is sorted, so all your energy goes into making better photographs.

Residential photography workshop FAQs

Everything you need to know before booking a residential workshop.

Where are the workshops held and what equipment do I need?

The precise meeting point is emailed to you 4–7 days before the workshop, along with a recommended kit list. Bring your camera, lenses, filters and a tripod if required. You’re responsible for travelling to and from the meeting point; travel between locations during the workshop is included.

Who runs the workshops and how much tuition will I get?

Every residential workshop is run personally by Alan Ranger — BIPP-qualified (ABIPP) and ARPS, with 25+ years shooting and 15+ years teaching. You’ll receive as much one-to-one tuition as you need throughout, and all levels of experience are welcome and supported.

How big are the groups?

Most residential workshops are limited to four clients, sometimes fewer. This keeps tuition personal, gives everyone individual attention, and means we can travel together in one car.

How do I book and can I spread the cost?

You can book directly through the website; any sold-out dates are marked. An interest-free payment plan is available to spread the cost, and gift vouchers can be used towards a place.

What about accommodation and meals?

All rooms are single occupancy with no single supplement, en-suite or with a private bathroom (double occupancy on request). Hotels and B&Bs are tried and tested to 3–5 star standards. We eat at the hotel where possible. Breakfast is included; lunches, evening meals and drinks are not.

What if my camera or gear isn’t very advanced?

It really isn’t about expensive equipment — good photography is about seeing and timing, not the latest kit. Any camera that lets you control exposure manually is perfectly suited, whether an entry-level DSLR, a mirrorless body or a bridge camera. Bring what you have; filters and a tripod can be provided if required, and Alan will advise on whether anything is worth adding — without ever pushing you to spend.

What’s included and excluded in the price?

Included: private-room accommodation (no single supplement), breakfast, photographic excursions and tuition, image reviews throughout, filters and tripods if required, and travel between locations during the workshop. Not included: travel to and from the start point, personal insurance, lunches, evening meals and drinks.

Ready for a weekend behind the camera?

Small groups, real tuition, and the best of the British landscape — all sorted for you.
