Which one sounds like you?

Most people arrive with one of these in mind — every session starts from where you are

This sounds like me…Where we'd start
Lightroom is a mess — I can't find images, there are duplicates everywhere and no real workflowScreen-share your catalogue: folders, imports, file naming and searching — then a repeatable editing workflow that sticks
I don't really know how to edit my photos properlyStep through a develop workflow on your own images — what to adjust, in what order, and why
"Are my photos any good?" — I want honest feedbackImage critique on your shots: depth of field, sharpness and composition, with clear next steps
I want to pull my best work into a portfolio that hangs togetherSelecting images and editing a series for consistency and cohesion (working towards a distinction? see RPS mentoring below)
I'm stuck in Auto and want to understand my cameraExposure, focus and the settings that matter — made simple over screen-share
I'm too far from Coventry for in-person lessonsEverything covered over Zoom — the same tuition, from home, anywhere in the UK

Whatever brings you here, your sessions are built from the same toolkit — we focus on the parts you need:

All you need to join

A simple setup is all it takes. If you can join a Zoom call and share your screen, we can work together.

  • Internet connection — stable enough for Zoom video and screen-share
  • Laptop, desktop or tablet — a laptop is ideal for editing work
  • Zoom — free to use, installed or in your browser
  • Dropbox folder — Alan provides this so you can share images for review

If editing is part of your goal, we screen-share Lightroom and build a workflow you can repeat on your own.

Online 1-2-1 photography lesson over Zoom — reviewing images in Lightroom with Alan Ranger

Learning with someone who does this every day

I've spent more than 15 years teaching photography — one-to-one, in groups, and online over Zoom. The whole point of a private online lesson is simple: my full attention, pitched at your level, on exactly what you want to learn.

No two people arrive the same, so no two lessons are the same.

Not sure online lessons work for you?

Two worries come up again and again, so let me answer both honestly:

"Can you really teach photography over Zoom?" Yes — screen-share means I see your camera settings and your edits live, just as if I were sat beside you. Most students are surprised how natural it feels, and you keep clear notes to work from afterwards.

"I'm a complete beginner." Perfect — there's no group to keep up with and nothing to be embarrassed about. We start exactly where you are.

Online photography lessons — FAQs

Are online lessons suitable for complete beginners?

Absolutely. There's no group to keep up with and nothing to feel self-conscious about — we start exactly where you are, whether that's understanding your camera or finding your way around Lightroom for the first time.

Do I need a "proper camera"?

No. Bring whatever you have — a DSLR, mirrorless, bridge or even a phone. The lessons are built around your kit and what you want to achieve with it.

Can you help with Lightroom editing over Zoom?

Yes — this is one of the most common reasons people book. Over screen-share we can sort out your folders, imports, duplicates and file naming, then build a repeatable editing workflow on your own images.

How much do online photography lessons cost?

A single 1-hour Zoom session is £50. Bundles of 4, 6, 8 or 12 sessions save you between 15% and 25%. You can pay as you go for a single session, or buy a bundle and book the dates later.

How do I book and schedule my Zoom sessions?

For a single session, book directly in the online diary and pay at the point of booking. For a bundle, buy the package first — Alan then emails you a diary link and a code that bypasses payment, so you book your dates whenever they suit you, 9am–5pm Mon–Fri.

What software or setup do I need?

A stable internet connection, a laptop, desktop or tablet, and Zoom (free). Alan will share a Dropbox folder so you can send images for review. If you can join a Zoom call and share your screen, you're ready.

How does feedback work between sessions?

You'll leave each session knowing exactly what to practise and why. Many clients also receive a written summary of what was covered, and you can share new images via Dropbox for review in your next session.

Do you offer RPS mentoring online?

Yes. If you're working towards an LRPS, ARPS or FRPS distinction, we can run structured panel preparation over Zoom — sequencing, consistency and feedback cycles. RPS clients have a 100% pass rate. See the RPS mentoring page for details.

Where can I read reviews from students?

You'll find verified 4 and 5-star reviews across Google and Trustpilot — over 800 in total. There's a link to them throughout this page.
