Photography Workshop Event Details Dartmoor
Description: This is a 3-day, 2-night residential landscape photography workshop based around Dartmoor National Park in South Devon, open to all levels from beginner to advanced. Dartmoor is one of England's most atmospheric wild landscapes — a vast sweep of rugged open moor, dramatic granite tors, ancient stunted woodland and serene rivers running through hidden valleys — and across a weekend you'll learn to read and photograph this dramatic terrain in its ever-changing light.
Over three days we range across the moor and its woodlands, working a variety of locations as the conditions dictate — from the sculptural granite tors and big moorland vistas to the mossy, otherworldly ancient woods and tumbling rivers. The focus is on three things that make a strong landscape image here: composing order from a wild, expansive scene, controlling exposure and depth of field across big tonal ranges, and timing your shoot to the moods of Dartmoor light, with optional sunrise and sunset shoots and evening picture reviews. Throughout, the emphasis isn't just on the grand vista but on learning to see it — composing with intention, working intimate detail as readily as the wide view, and reading light and weather as a harmony rather than chasing the obvious shot. Be prepared for some longer walks over rougher ground — this is a more demanding workshop that takes you to the moor's most rewarding spots.
With a maximum of just four photographers, this is genuinely personal tuition — Alan plans each day around the season and the forecast, and sends a detailed location itinerary a few days ahead. Accommodation, breakfast and evening meals are included, so all you have to think about is your photography, and you'll come away with a varied portfolio of dramatic Dartmoor landscapes — moors, tors and ancient woodland — and the field craft to capture wild country anywhere. An extra night's accommodation is available the day before if required — please request in advance, subject to hotel availability.
