Description: This is a 3-day, 2-night residential landscape photography workshop on the iconic island of Anglesey, off the north-west coast of Wales, open to all levels from beginner to advanced. Anglesey's coastline is a photographer's dream — over 200 square miles ringed by sandy coves, working harbours, rocky headlands and three iconic lighthouses — and across a weekend you'll shoot it in the golden hours when its colour, light and sea views are at their most spectacular.
We work the island's finest coastal locations — from Penmon Point's Trwyn Du Lighthouse and the Church in the Sea to South Stack, Llanddwyn Island and the strange, Martian-coloured landscape of Parys Mountain, once the world's largest copper mine. The focus is on three things that make a strong coastal landscape: composing sea, shore and sky into a balanced frame, working the golden-hour light at sunrise and sunset, and using long exposure to capture the movement of the Welsh sea. Throughout, the emphasis isn't just on the iconic view but on learning to see it — composing with intention, working intimate detail as readily as the wide vista, and reading colour and light as a harmony rather than chasing the obvious shot. The days follow the light — optional sunrise and sunset shoots, full days on location with tuition, and evenings for relaxed picture reviews.
With a maximum of just four photographers and transport between locations included, this is genuinely personal, hassle-free tuition — Alan plans each day around the tides, the season and the forecast, and sends a detailed location itinerary a few days ahead. Accommodation and breakfast are included, so all you have to think about for three days is your photography, and you'll come away with a portfolio of dramatic Anglesey coastal images and the field craft to read light and sea anywhere. An extra night's accommodation is available the day before if required — please request in advance, subject to hotel availability.
Alan approaches photography as an art — an art that is mediated by technology, but nonetheless an art.
Much of the workshop involved developing artistic appreciations of the landscape. Technical questions were certainly addressed, but the core of the workshop was concerned with how to best represent the beauty that we saw. The experience of watching the day break on a beautiful Welsh beach would have been worth the price of admission.
Back in London we spoke with someone who grew up on Anglesey. When we told him where Alan had taken us, he said that these were the places he would have gone. You will not be disappointed.
