A photographer who spent 20 years in business first

I’m Alan Ranger — a professional photographer, educator and mentor based in Coventry. I teach people to make better photographs, and I shoot commercial work for businesses across the Midlands.

Before photography I spent two decades in business and IT change management at board level. That background still shapes how I work — I understand a brief, a deadline and a commercial outcome, and I teach the why behind every decision, never just the buttons.

My story

From the boardroom to behind the camera

For two decades I built a corporate career — business and IT change management at board level, blue-chip clients, a couple of years in Manhattan with Lucent, budgets into the tens of millions.

Over time, what held my attention wasn’t the politics — it was people. Helping someone find the role that actually fitted them, rather than the job title they’d been handed. Seeing the person, not the slot.

Other things were quietly reshaping how I saw the world too. Surviving cancer in my twenties had a way of clarifying what mattered. Six months travelling through South America and India opened my eyes. And weekends spent among the UK’s lakes, rivers and mountains became the antidote to boardroom stress — a reminder of the bigger picture: our place in the world, and how we choose to see it. The camera came with me everywhere. In 2013 I stopped fitting it around the day job and went all in.

The instinct never changed — see the person, strip out the jargon, find the bigger picture. It’s how I teach, and it’s what business clients get when they hire me.

What makes the difference

Most photography teaching starts with the camera. I start with seeing — notice what’s in front of you, decide what the picture is for, then reach for the settings. Settings are maybe 20% of a photograph; the other 80% is light, timing and composition, the part you can’t get from a YouTube tutorial. I write about this thinking each month in my LinkedIn newsletter, Light & Logic.
