Alan Ranger is a British landscape photographer, photography educator, and workshop leader based in Warwickshire, England. He has been involved in public exhibitions, photography education, and community-based projects since 2010.
Early life and career
Ranger previously worked in IT and change management before transitioning into photography full-time. In 2010, he founded Alan Ranger Photography, offering tuition, one-to-one mentoring, and UK-based workshops.[1]
In 2016 and 2017, he was invited to lecture at the Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Over two years, he delivered more than 40 presentations to international audiences, appearing alongside prominent photographers including Don McCullin, Steve McCurry, and Sebastião Salgado.[2][3]
Teaching and workshops
Ranger has taught more than 300 evening classes and led over 100 workshops throughout the UK, including sessions in Snowdonia, the Peak District, Northumberland, the Suffolk coast, and the Scottish Highlands. His workshops focus on practical skills such as composition, light control, and creative interpretation, with an emphasis on environmental values and ethical practice.[4]
He is a registered mentor for Royal Photographic Society (RPS) distinction candidates and offers one-to-one and group support for LRPS and ARPS panels.[5][6]
His tuition is also available through third-party platforms such as WorkshopsAndTours.com[7] and WhereCanWeGo.com.[8]
Style and approach
Ranger's photography combines traditional landscape techniques with minimalism, long exposures, and environmental themes. His subjects often explore seasonal transitions, erosion, and human-made structures in decline. He promotes low-impact and carbon-conscious practices during workshops.[9]
