Description: This Peak District photography workshop is a full day in the heart of Derbyshire's Hope Valley, open to all levels from beginner to advanced. It's built around two of the area's most rewarding and contrasting locations — the wooded, water-filled drama of Padley Gorge in the morning and the rugged, sculptural landscape of Bolehill Quarry in the afternoon — so in a single day you photograph two completely different faces of the Peak District, and learn to read each one rather than just point a camera at it.
The morning at Padley Gorge — a deep, tree-lined valley with the Burbage Brook tumbling through it — is all about slowing down and seeing: simplifying a busy woodland scene into intimate close-ups of rock, moss and water, finding the quiet order in the chaos, and using long exposure to draw movement out of the brook. The afternoon at Bolehill Quarry opens out to the heights of Millstone Edge and silver birch woodland, where the work shifts to composing the bigger landscape. Across both, the technical craft is the floor we build on — exposure, depth of field, the settings that give you control — but the real lesson is learning to see: composing with intention, working close-up detail as readily as the wide vista, and reading light, texture and colour as a harmony rather than chasing the loud, obvious shot.
We meet at the Grindleford Railway Café, where you can grab an optional pre-shoot breakfast before we head into the gorge. Lunch is back at the café halfway through — buy on the day or bring your own — before a short drive over to Bolehill for the afternoon session. Taught personally in a small group, this is hands-on, on-location tuition pitched at exactly your level, with Alan beside you in the field throughout; a detailed itinerary is sent a few days ahead, adjusted for the season and forecast, so you'll come away with a varied portfolio of Peak District images and a sharper, more intentional way of seeing landscape anywhere.
