  • Description: Every August the moors of the Peak District turn a spectacular purple as the heather comes into bloom, and this Peak District Heather Photography Workshop is your chance to capture that fleeting display at its very best — open to all levels and any camera. Run as short, focused sessions at the magic hours of sunrise and sunset, it pairs one of Britain's most iconic landscapes with its richest seasonal colour, and the low golden light that makes heather and gritstone glow.

You can join either of two sessions, or both: a sunset shoot at Surprise View above Hathersage in Derbyshire — one of the finest viewpoints in the Peak, with sweeping heather foregrounds, the Mother Cap stone and famously dark skies — or a sunrise shoot among the dramatic gritstone of The Roaches, Hen Cloud and Ramshaw Rocks in Staffordshire, weathered into extraordinary shapes above a sea of purple moorland.

A blaze of purple is more seductive than it is easy, and the real work is learning to see past the obvious. The technical craft is the floor we build on — controlling exposure to hold rich colour and a dramatic sky, and working quickly in the brief light of dawn and dusk — but the focus is on composing with intention: balancing the heather and the gritstone rock forms into a frame with order, working the intimate detail of bloom and weathered stone as readily as the wide moorland vista, and treating the purple, the gold and the low light as a harmony rather than a colour to crank. We shoot two to three locations each session as conditions allow, and the aim throughout is an image with mood and restraint — one that feels like that moor at first or last light.

It's a small group of no more than six, taught personally and pitched at exactly your level, with one-to-one guidance in the field throughout. Whether you take the sunset, the sunrise or make a weekend of both, you'll come away with a portfolio of the Peak District's heather at its peak — and a sharper, more intentional way of seeing colour, light and landscape that you can take anywhere. If you're booking both sessions, please arrange your own overnight accommodation near The Roaches for the early sunrise shoot. Please also note this is a seasonal workshop tied to the heather bloom, so exact dates may shift slightly with the season.
