Why learn with Alan Ranger

BIPP qualified (ABIPP) ARPS 25+ years shooting 15+ years teaching

Recognised in national and international landscape photography awards and competitions — including Landscape Photographer of the Year (LPOTY) — with 15 awards over more than 10 years. Every workshop is taught personally, with full public liability insurance and professional accreditation.

Learn from a pro who teaches every day

Every workshop is run personally by me — not handed to an assistant. My approach is simple: see, design, then shoot. Most of the work happens before the shutter ever clicks, because that's the part that actually changes your photographs.

1 · SEE2 · DESIGN3 · SHOOT

You'll get the technical side when you need it, but the real value is the bit you can't get from a YouTube video: someone next to you in the field, helping you notice, compose and decide. I write about that thinking each month in my newsletter, Light & Logic.

What people say about the workshops

★★★★★
“A fantastic day out to a truly magical place. Alan was great throughout the whole day, giving lots of one-to-one advice and guidance which made me see things differently. I would definitely recommend and would book again.”
Lisa Vincent, Peak District landscape workshop
★★★★★
“Alan approaches photography as an art — an art that is mediated by technology, but nonetheless an art. The experience of watching the day break on a beautiful Welsh beach would have been worth the price of admission. You will not be disappointed.”
Michael White, Anglesey residential workshop

Photography workshop FAQs

The common questions before booking a workshop.

What types of photography workshop do you run?

Two main types. Landscape day and half-day workshops are on-location sessions across the UK, from two hours to a full day, with no overnight stay. Residential workshops are immersive multi-day trips with accommodation and breakfast included. Both are small-group and led personally by Alan.

Which workshop is right for me — day, half-day or residential?

If you want to learn close to home, try a workshop for the first time, or focus on a specific location or season, a day or half-day landscape workshop is ideal. If you'd like a fuller, immersive experience with more time around the best light, choose a residential workshop. Use the calendar to see what's coming up.

Do I need to be experienced?

No. All levels are welcome, from first-time camera owners to experienced photographers. Groups are small, so you get guidance pitched exactly at your level — we start wherever you are.

What camera and kit do I need?

Any camera you can use in manual or semi-manual mode is fine, including many bridge cameras. A tripod helps; if you don't have one, Alan can lend you a tripod and filters on the day. A full kit list is sent with your joining instructions.

How big are the groups?

Small. Day and half-day workshops are usually a maximum of six people, and residential workshops are usually a maximum of four. That keeps plenty of one-to-one time available.

Where are the workshops held and how will I know where to meet?

Workshops run at locations across the UK. You'll get a joining email a few days before with the exact meeting point, parking information and final details, along with the recommended kit list — so you have time to plan your journey.

How do I book, and can I spread the cost?

Book directly through the calendar on this page. If you'd prefer to spread the cost, an interest-free 12-month payment plan is available. Workshops also make great gifts as digital gift vouchers.

What's the cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel, please let Alan know in writing as early as you can; cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale depending on how close to the date it is. Full details are in the booking terms & conditions (PDF).

Can I buy a workshop as a gift?

Yes — digital gift vouchers are valid for 12 months and can be used against any workshop, course or one-to-one session.
