Photography Workshop Event Details Lavender
Description: This Lavender Photography Workshop is a magical evening among the lavender rows of the Cotswolds at Snowshill in Gloucestershire or depending on arrangements at Warwickshire Lavender Farm, Bubbenhall — open to all levels and any camera. Best of all, you'll photograph the fields after the farm has closed to the general public, so instead of working around coachloads of day-trippers you have the spectacular sea of purple and the wildflower areas largely to yourselves — making it far easier to slow down, see properly and compose clean shots as the light softens towards sunset and the colour comes alive.
A field of lavender is seductive but deceptively hard — it's all too easy to come home with the loud, over-saturated purple shot everyone takes. The real work here is learning to see past that. The technical craft is the floor we build on — focusing and exposing accurately in fading light, and holding both shadow and highlight as the sun drops — but the focus is on composing with intention: finding order and a lead-in through the endless rows, working the intimate, abstract close-up of colour and texture as readily as the sweeping vista, and treating the purple, the green and the warm evening light as a harmony to balance rather than a colour to crank. The aim is a photograph with mood and restraint — one that feels like that quiet evening in the field.
It's a small group of no more than six, taught personally and pitched at exactly your level, with one-to-one guidance throughout. With the crowds gone and the fields quiet, you'll have the space and time to really work your compositions — and you'll come away with a portfolio of vivid lavender images at their most atmospheric, plus a sharper, more intentional way of seeing colour, light and detail that you can take anywhere.
This is a special after-hours session: the farm opens to us beyond its normal public hours so we can shoot from 5p/6pmm into the early sunset light 9/9:30pm, and your workshop fee includes that commercial after-hours access. Please note the dates and finish times are set by the lavender farm rather than by Alan, and may be subject to change with the season, flowering and weather as they do not extend the hours if rain is forecast on the day, so you need to be flexible and be able to swap to an alternative Saturday evening that the farm has extended hours. Usually the first 3 Saturdays of July.
