  • Description: This Peak District photography workshop is a full day in the heart of Derbyshire's Hope Valley, open to all levels from beginner to advanced. It's built around two of the area's most rewarding and contrasting locations — the wooded, water-filled drama of Padley Gorge in the morning and the rugged, sculptural landscape of Bolehill Quarry in the afternoon — so in a single day you photograph two completely different faces of the Peak District, and learn to read each one rather than just point a camera at it.

The morning at Padley Gorge — a deep, tree-lined valley with the Burbage Brook tumbling through it — is all about slowing down and seeing: simplifying a busy woodland scene into intimate close-ups of rock, moss and water, finding the quiet order in the chaos, and using long exposure to draw movement out of the brook. The afternoon at Bolehill Quarry opens out to the heights of Millstone Edge and silver birch woodland, where the work shifts to composing the bigger landscape. Across both, the technical craft is the floor we build on — exposure, depth of field, the settings that give you control — but the real lesson is learning to see: composing with intention, working close-up detail as readily as the wide vista, and reading light, texture and colour as a harmony rather than chasing the loud, obvious shot.

We meet at the Grindleford Railway Café, where you can grab an optional pre-shoot breakfast before we head into the gorge. Lunch is back at the café halfway through — buy on the day or bring your own — before a short drive over to Bolehill for the afternoon session. Taught personally in a small group, this is hands-on, on-location tuition pitched at exactly your level, with Alan beside you in the field throughout; a detailed itinerary is sent a few days ahead, adjusted for the season and forecast, so you'll come away with a varied portfolio of Peak District images and a sharper, more intentional way of seeing landscape anywhere.

Peak District Photography Workshops - Padley Gorge and Bolehill Quarry

    Peak District Photography Workshops - Morning - Padley Gorge 9:30 - 12:30

Padley Gorge is a deep but narrow valley in the Peak District, Derbyshire, between the village of Grindleford and the A6187 road. The gorge is wooded with a stream, the Burbage Brook, at the bottom.
Padley provides numerous opportunities to refine your composition in many aspects.  You can opt for close-up sketches of woodland growth, rocks and water or tackle a wider vista showing the river and work on long exposures, water abstracts and much more.

    Peak District Photography Workshops - Afternoon - Bolehill Quarry - 13:15 - 16:15

Created hundreds of millions of years ago by the power of natural forces, the last few centuries have seen the rugged landscape surrounding Padley Gorge sculpted by man who long ago quarried these gritstone Edges for stone and tunnelled deep beneath the moors to drive a railway line through the hills. Now an area of outstanding natural beauty, this walk takes in the breathtaking heights of Millstone Edge and majestic silver birch woodlands. It's a great location for any level of photographer to hone their skills and techniques.
