  • Description: This Garden Photography Workshop is an intimate afternoon in Alan's own private garden in Coventry — his personal creative studio, a space he knows intimately and tends with a photographer's eye — open to all levels and any camera. A garden is one of the richest and most overlooked subjects there is: get close and the flowers, foliage, structures and borders reveal endless macro, close-up and abstract images, and this relaxed half-day is all about learning to see them, then photograph them with intention.

The technical craft is the floor we build on — getting sharp focus, using your lens for macro and close-up detail, and controlling exposure and depth of field — but the real work is learning to look. You'll be given four photography assignments with guidance notes that push you to experiment and vary your approach, from intimate macro to wider garden portraits, training your eye to find the abstract within the planting and to compose with real intention. Throughout, the emphasis is on reading colour, light and texture as a harmony — letting the flowers sing without tipping into the loud, over-saturated shot — so your images feel considered and your own, not the obvious bloom-in-the-middle snap. Image reviews and feedback on a large screen in the gazebo help you see what's working and why.

Places are limited to just four, so this is genuinely personal tuition, with Alan on hand for settings, composition and one-to-one guidance the whole time — and tea, coffee and cake served throughout. You'll come away with your own portfolio of garden images, and a sharper, more intentional way of seeing detail, colour and light that changes how you photograph flowers and nature everywhere.

  • Description - Garden Photography Workshop

2.5hrs in my back garden for a garden photography workshop

My garden has been, for a long time, my creative studio. Beyond photography and the outdoors I have a passion for gardening, plants, flowers and all things natural that are permanent and evolving or periodic tourists be it flora and fauna and the diversity of wildlife that visits. This is a limited space garden photography workshop and is available for anyone who shares my love of the garden space and wants the opportunity to have hands-on guidance on how to create an image amongst so many visual delights. You can focus on close-up macro, wider portraits of segments of the garden structures and borders or whatever grabs your attention.

I will be on hand to help with camera settings, composition, and instant photo reviews with my laptop on-hand and serve you tea/coffee/water and cake!

Places are limited to four to ensure my lawn is not wrecked (but seriously) and to allow you the space and time with me to explore and maximise the time and environment.
