  • Description: For fifteen autumns I’ve guided photographers through Batsford Arboretum’s 60 acres — more than 300 of them — and I know almost every inch of it: which tree, which shrub, which corner comes alive at which hour, and exactly where the light falls as the day moves round. This workshop is built on that knowledge. Open to all levels and any camera, it’s a chance to photograph Batsford’s autumn colour with a seasoned professional who puts you in the right place at the right time, so you can spend your energy on the thing that actually matters: seeing.

Because that's where this workshop really lives. We'll cover the technical setup — exposure, depth of field, the settings that give you control — but that's only the floor. The real work is learning to look: to compose with intention and move beyond the cliché shot everyone else comes home with, to find the close-up, the macro detail and the quiet abstract as readily as the wide vista, and above all to read light, texture and colour as a harmony rather than chasing the over-saturated "look how vivid this is" image. Colour handled with restraint and relationship will always outlast colour shouted.

With a group of no more than six and genuine one-to-one attention throughout, you’ll have the time and space to slow down and work properly across a guided day paced around the light. You’ll leave not just with a set of strong autumn images, but with a way of seeing — light, texture and composition — that changes how you photograph colour, woodland and the natural world wherever you go next.

Good to know: the £150 workshop price includes entrance to the Arboretum. We meet at 9:30am in the Batsford café for a breakfast briefing (breakfast and drinks at your own cost), head into the arboretum at 10am, break for lunch at 12:30, then photograph a different part of the arboretum in the afternoon light, aiming to be back at the café by 3pm. The café and outdoor snack bar are open through the day, with toilets on site by the reception area.

Description

Autumn Photography - Batsford Arboretum _ Gloucestershire

Batsford Arboretum always provides a terrific display of colour, texture and contrasts throughout Autumn. The photography workshops at Batsford are always very popular and give a wide range of topics to photograph.

You may like the close-up details of a leaf, fungi or texture of vibrant bark, or the wider angle views of colours and tree shapes that grace this location. There really is a complete range and choice for everyone here so it's not to be missed.

Batsford Arboretum is home to a unique collection of some of the world's most beautiful and rare trees, shrubs, and bamboos spread across 56 acres.

YOUR GUIDE For fifteen autumns I've guided more than 300 photographers through Batsford, and I know almost every inch of it — which tree, which shrub, which corner comes alive at which hour, and exactly where the light falls as the day moves round. You spend the day in the right place at the right time, with a seasoned professional at your side.

THE ARBORETUM - HISTORY Batsford Arboretum was the brainchild of Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, who inherited the Batsford estate in 1886. Freeman-Mitford, later the 1st Lord Redesdale, travelled widely throughout the Orient and was heavily influenced by Chinese and Japanese culture, philosophy, and horticulture.

Upon taking possession of Batsford, he created a unique mix of parkland and garden, with groupings of plants in imitation of Chinese style. Redesdale was an expert in bamboos, and many of the bamboo plants you can see today were his plantings.

Redesdale also began to plant unusual varieties of plants and trees, alongside a 600-meter-long watercourse. Included in his vision were a hermit's cave, rockery, and a rest house. The foundation established by Lord Redesdale was greatly expanded by Frederick Hamilton Wills, the 2nd Lord Dulverston, who inherited Batsford in 1956.

It is to Lord Dulverston that Batsford owes a great deal of its appeal today; he added considerably to the collection of trees, creating at Batsford an arboretum of the highest international standards.

THE COLLECTIONS Though the focus of Batsford is truly international, it is in the area of Oriental shrubs and trees that the collection shines. There are over 3,000 labeled plants, trees, and shrubs at Batsford. Notable varieties include oaks, maples, mountain ashes, magnolias, Japanese cherries, bamboos, and pines. Batsford holds the national collection of Japanese Village Cherries.
