Batsford Arboretum Photography Workshops Autumn - Gloucs
Photograph one of Britain’s finest tree collections at its autumn peak
For nearly fifteen years I’ve returned to Batsford each autumn, and I know every corner of it — which spot works at which hour, where the light falls, the angles that turn it into a photograph rather than a snapshot.
Open to any level and any camera, half-day or full-day sessions in Gloucestershire. Small groups, genuine one-to-one attention, and the time to slow down and see.
A workshop built on knowing the place
Gloucestershire · autumn colour · half or full day
We’ll cover the technical setup — exposure, depth of field, the settings that give you control — but that’s only the floor. The real work is learning to look: to compose with intention and move beyond the cliché shot everyone else comes home with.
You’ll find the close-up, the macro detail and the quiet abstract as readily as the wide vista, and learn to read light, texture and colour as a harmony rather than chasing the over-saturated image. Colour handled with restraint will always outlast colour shouted.
You’ll leave not just with strong autumn images, but with a way of seeing that changes how you photograph colour, woodland and the natural world wherever you go next.
What you’ll photograph — and learn
We explore the arboretum at a mindful pace, varying your shots as the light changes through the session.
Autumn colour
The wide vistas and sweeping colour Batsford is famous for — done with composition and intent, not the cliché everyone else comes home with.
Macro & detail
Close-up, texture and the quiet abstract. Leaves, bark, water and shape — the pictures most visitors walk straight past.
Reading light
How to see colour as harmony rather than saturation, and use the direction and quality of autumn light to give your images depth.
Choose your session
Pick a half-day morning or afternoon, or a full day in the colour. The early morning session has exclusive access before the gardens open — the quiet best light, with the place to ourselves. Entrance to the arboretum is included. Select your date below.

Photography Workshop Event Batsford Arboretum
Description: For nearly fifteen years I've returned to Batsford Arboretum each autumn, and in that time I've come to know every corner of it — which spot works at which hour, where the light falls and the angles that turn one of Britain's finest tree collections into a photograph rather than a snapshot. This workshop is built on that knowledge. Open to all levels and any camera, it's a chance to photograph Batsford's autumn colour with someone who can put you in the right place at the right time, so you can spend your energy on the thing that actually matters: seeing.
Because that's where this workshop really lives. We'll cover the technical setup — exposure, depth of field, the settings that give you control — but that's only the floor. The real work is learning to look: to compose with intention and move beyond the cliché shot everyone else comes home with, to find the close-up, the macro detail and the quiet abstract as readily as the wide vista, and above all to read light, texture and colour as a harmony rather than chasing the over-saturated "look how vivid this is" image. Colour handled with restraint and relationship will always outlast colour shouted.
With small numbers and genuine one-to-one attention throughout, you'll have the time and space to slow down and work properly — and you can choose a half-day morning or afternoon session, or a full day in the colour. You'll leave not just with a set of strong autumn images, but with a way of seeing — light, texture and composition — that changes how you photograph colour, woodland and the natural world wherever you go next.
Good to know: the workshop price includes entrance to the Arboretum. On the early morning session we have exclusive access before the gardens open to the public — the quiet best light of the day, with the place to ourselves. A grab-and-go breakfast is available from around 9:30am, and the café and outdoor snack bar are open through the day for lunch and refreshments, with toilets on site by the reception area.
The history of Batsford Arboretum
55 acres near Moreton-in-Marsh, with one of the country’s great autumn displays.
Batsford Arboretum, in the heart of Gloucestershire, is steeped in history, with roots tracing back to the 19th century. It was developed by Lord Redesdale and later expanded by his son, who introduced a diverse range of trees and plants, many from Asia. Today Batsford is renowned for its stunning autumn displays, making it a prime location for photography.
For over ten years I have chosen Batsford for my autumn photography workshops, teaching hundreds of photographers to capture its seasonal beauty. The rich history, combined with the incredible diversity of flora, creates a perfect environment for learning and creativity.
