Spend a few hours — or a whole day — making better landscape photographs in the field, with a professional alongside you.

These are practical, on-location landscape photography workshops across the Midlands, the Peak District, Wales and beyond — from short two-hour woodland walks to full days at the coast and in the hills. You bring your camera; I bring the locations, the timing and the tuition. The focus is on you and your photographs, not on me lecturing to a crowd.

Groups are small (usually a maximum of six, sometimes fewer), so there's plenty of one-to-one guidance whatever your level — whether you're getting off Auto for the first time or refining a style you already have. We work with the light and conditions on the day, review images as we go, and you leave with photographs you're pleased with and a clearer idea of how you made them.

Is a landscape workshop right for you?

Most people arrive with one of these in mind — find yours below

This sounds like me…Where we’d start
I’m newer to my camera and want to get off AutoWe start wherever you are — understanding light, using a tripod and getting confident, with hands-on help all the way
I already shoot but feel stuck in a rutWe work on seeing and composition, not just settings, so your photographs start to look like the ones in your head
I want time in great locations without the planningThe spots are scouted and timed for the best light, so you’re not guessing where to stand or when to be there
I learn best by doing, with someone alongside meSmall groups (usually max 6) mean real one-to-one guidance in the field, with image reviews as we go
I only want the odd workshop when one suits meAd-hoc is fine — book any single workshop that fits your diary, with no commitment to a series
I worry I’m not experienced enough to keep upYou’re exactly who these suit — all levels welcome, and the pace is set to suit you
I don’t think my camera or gear is good enoughIt’s about seeing, not kit — any camera with manual control is fine, and you can borrow filters and a tripod on the day
I’m buying this for someone elseGift vouchers are available, valid 12 months, and can be used against any workshop or session

“A fantastic day out to a truly magical place. Alan was great throughout the whole day, giving lots of one-to-one advice and guidance which made me see things differently. I would definitely recommend and would book again.”

A different way of teaching photography

Less staring at menus, more learning to see — the part you can't get from a book or a video.

See first, then design, then shoot

Most people spend their time the wrong way round — head down in the camera, settings first. I teach it the other way: notice what's actually in front of you, decide what you want the picture to say, and only then pick up the camera to make it happen.

SEEDESIGNSHOOT

The camera serves the feeling

Settings matter, but they're roughly 20% of a good photograph. The other 80% is light, timing and composition — the choices that make an image feel like something. That's where we spend most of our time together.

It's hands-on and tailored to you: real-time guidance on location, the bit that simply doesn't come across in a YouTube tutorial or a manual.

If you like the thinking behind how I teach, I write about it monthly in my LinkedIn newsletter, Light & Logic.

Learning with someone who does this every day

I’ve spent more than 15 years teaching people photography — one-to-one, in groups, in the field, and on stage at international events. A landscape workshop is simply the most hands-on version of that: small groups, the best locations, and my full attention pitched exactly at your level.

Recognised in national and international landscape photography awards and competitions — including Landscape Photographer of the Year (LPOTY) — with 15 awards over more than 10 years.

Not sure a workshop is for you?

Two worries come up again and again, so let me answer both honestly:

“I’m not experienced enough.” You don’t need to be. Groups are small, all levels are welcome, and you get as much one-to-one guidance as you need — we start wherever you are and go at your pace.

“I could find these locations myself.” You could — but a workshop takes away the planning, the timing and the guesswork. You arrive, and everything from light to logistics is sorted, so all your energy goes into making better photographs.

Why a landscape workshop with Alan — and what's included

Landscape workshop FAQs

Do I need to be experienced?
No. All levels are welcome, from first-time camera owners to experienced photographers. Groups are small (usually max 6), so you get guidance pitched exactly at your level — we start wherever you are.
What camera and kit do I need?
Any camera you can use in manual or semi-manual mode is fine, including many bridge cameras. A tripod helps for landscapes; if you don't have one, I can lend you a tripod and filters on the day. A full kit list is sent with your joining instructions.
How long are the workshops?
They range from short two-hour woodland walks to full days at the coast or in the hills. The length is shown on each workshop below so you can pick what suits you.
How big are the groups?
Small — usually a maximum of six people, sometimes fewer, depending on the location and parking. That keeps plenty of one-to-one time available.
What happens if the weather's bad?
We work with the conditions — some of the best landscape images come from dramatic weather. Workshops run in most conditions; if anything makes a location unsafe or unworkable, I'll offer a new date or a credit.
What's included, and what isn't?
Included: expert on-location tuition, a small group, image review and feedback, loan of filters and a tripod if needed, and joining instructions in advance. Not included: travel to and from the location, and lunch or refreshments — bring a packed lunch, or use a café or pub at the break on full days.
How will I know where to meet?
You'll get a joining email a few days before your workshop with the exact meeting point, parking information and final details, along with the recommended kit list — so you have time to plan your journey.
How do I book, and can I spread the cost?
Book directly through this page or the workshop calendar. If you'd prefer to spread the cost, an interest-free 12-month payment plan is available. Workshops also make great gifts — see gift vouchers.
What's the cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel, please let me know in writing as early as you can; cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale depending on how close to the date it is. Full details are in the booking terms & conditions (PDF).
Can I buy a workshop as a gift?
Yes — digital gift vouchers are valid for 12 months and can be used against any workshop, course or one-to-one session.
Can I bring a friend or partner?
If they'd like to take part and there's a place available, yes — just book a place for each of you, and call or message me first if you'd like to check availability. Workshops are hands-on sessions built around each participant, so they're not set up for a non-photographing guest to come along and watch.
