Most people think learning photography is about learning the camera. It isn't. The camera is the easy part. The hard part — the part that actually changes your pictures — is learning to see. That's the difference this training is built around, and it's what makes it worth spending your Invest In You credits on.
If you work at Jaguar Land Rover, you have an allowance set aside each year to learn something new — credits through the scheme now called Invest In You (you may remember it as ELS, the Employee Learning Scheme). Photography has been one of the options for a long time: Alan Ranger Photography has been an approved JLR training provider since 2013, which is well over a decade of teaching JLR employees to take pictures they're proud of.
This isn't a sales pitch dressed up as an article. It's an honest explanation of what the training actually teaches, why it works, and how to use your credits — including for the courses and workshops that cost more than your credit value.
Why "learning to see" beats learning the buttons
Here's the thing almost no beginner is told: your camera is already good enough. The phone in your pocket is already good enough. The reason most photographs disappoint isn't the gear — it's that the picture was taken before it was seen. A glance, a raised camera, a press of the shutter. No decision in between.
Photography is, at its heart, an art of observation. The technical settings — aperture, shutter speed, ISO — only matter once you know what you're trying to say with the frame. Learn the seeing first, and the settings stop being intimidating; they become tools you reach for on purpose. Learn the settings without the seeing, and you end up with technically correct photographs of nothing in particular.
"The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see." Get the seeing right and the gear finally starts doing what you hoped it would.
That's the philosophy running through every course — whether it's a three-week beginners course, a woodland walk, or a one-to-one session. You'll absolutely come away knowing how to use your camera properly. But you'll also come away noticing light, shape, balance and moment in a way you didn't before. That's the bit that lasts.
A decade of teaching JLR employees
This isn't a new arrangement. Since 2013, hundreds of Jaguar Land Rover employees have used their learning credits on photography. In 2025 alone, more than 200 employees attended across 246 bookings and 24 different courses and workshops — and around a third came back for more than one session. People don't return to something that didn't work.
Alan is a professional photographer and tutor based in Coventry, on JLR's doorstep, with national qualifications and 15+ years of teaching behind him. The teaching is patient, plain-spoken and pitched at you — whether you've never taken the camera off Auto or you've been shooting for years and want to push further.
What JLR employees say
Real five-star reviews from Jaguar Land Rover employees who trained with Alan — many of them about exactly this: learning to see, and finally understanding their camera.
A great day spent learning about woodland photography — as a beginner I learnt a lot more about basic photography and how to use my camera. Highly recommend spending time with Alan to get some great tips.
Very impressive in understanding the technical aspects of how the camera works. Enjoyed the sessions and hopefully I'll keep improving my camera skills.
Alan is very knowledgeable about the area and offers many tips for taking good pictures of the bluebells and the wood in general. Would highly recommend to anyone of any skill level.
Alan clearly has a great enthusiasm for photography that he loves to share. He easily adapts his teaching style to suit each person's individual needs.
I've done the Beginner's course, the Lightroom course and two workshops, and thanks to Alan's coaching and honest feedback my photography improved significantly.
Really enjoyed the Peak District photography workshop run by Alan.
What you can actually book
The full Invest In You catalogue runs from short, gentle introductions right up to multi-day landscape adventures. A few of the most popular with JLR employees:
- Camera Courses for Beginners — the classic "get off Auto" course. Three weekly evening classes in Coventry that take you from confused to confident.
- Woodland & seasonal workshops — bluebells, autumn arboretums, long-exposure sunsets. Short, local, and brilliant for learning to see in the field.
- Private 1-2-1 lessons — just you and Alan, built entirely around your goals and your camera. The fastest way to progress.
- Landscape photography workshops — day trips and multi-day trips across the UK, from the Peak District to Snowdonia, Dorset to Northumberland.
- Lightroom editing & RPS mentoring — for when you want to finish your pictures properly, or work towards a Royal Photographic Society distinction.
You can see the complete list — every course, every price, and exactly what your credits cover — on the Jaguar Land Rover photography training hub page.
How the credits work — including for bigger courses
Your Invest In You credits are worth £100. That covers a lot outright: short workshops, the half-day sessions, a one-hour 1-2-1, and plenty more are fully paid by your credits — nothing for you to add.
The bit most people miss: split payments
If a course costs more than £100, you are not locked out of it. JLR's split payments option lets you put your £100 credit towards the cost and simply pay the difference yourself. So a £150 three-week beginners course costs you just £50. A multi-day landscape workshop can be part-funded by your credits too. Don't rule out the bigger experiences — your credits still take a chunk off the price.
Booking a course or workshop
Courses and workshops run on set dates, listed on each course page. Log in to the Invest In You portal, find Alan Ranger Photography, and request one of the dates shown.
Booking a private 1-2-1
One-to-one lessons are arranged around your availability, so there's one extra step: book your slot in Alan's diary first, then mirror that date and time in your Invest In You portal request. Full step-by-step instructions (and the diary links) are on the hub page.
Use this year's credits before they're gone
Learning credits don't roll over forever. If you've trained with Alan before, there's always a natural next step — a workshop in a season you haven't shot, a 1-2-1 to push past whatever you're stuck on, or an editing course to finish your pictures properly. And if you've never used your allowance, this is the year to start seeing differently.
