Which one sounds like you?

Most people arrive with one of these in mind — every session starts from where you are

This sounds like me…Where we’d start
I’ve a holiday coming up and just want better photosSimple, practical settings and a few composition habits so it’s easy on the day
I’m off on a trip of a lifetime — safari, Iceland, the tropicsPrep for the conditions you’ll meet, with your camera set up and rehearsed before you fly
I’ve bought a camera and I’m baffled by the settingsWe go through the menus and dials together and set it up for the way you want to shoot
I’ve had my camera for years but never use it properlyGet you off Auto and into the controls, with habits that actually stick
I’ve been asked to shoot a wedding or event and I’m nervousA clear shooting plan, the right settings and how to handle people and light
I’d like a side hustle — pets, families or babiesThe practical groundwork: technique, editing and how to approach the work

Whatever brought you here, your four sessions are built from the same toolkit — we focus on the parts you need:

Tailored one-to-one tuition, at your pace

Private lessons suit anyone who prefers personal tuition over a group — whether you're learning the fundamentals, refining your craft, working towards an RPS distinction, or even building a photography business. Sessions are bespoke: Alan assesses what you need and teaches at your level, so the time is spent on exactly what matters to you.

There are no other students; the time you pay for is entirely yours. Lessons mix sit-down theory, practical shooting and honest image feedback — and you leave each session with printed notes and a practice assignment to work on before the next one

Learning with someone who does this every day

I’ve spent more than 15 years teaching people photography — one-to-one, in groups, and on stage at international events. The whole point of a private lesson is simple: you get my full attention, pitched exactly at your level, on exactly what you want to learn.

No two people arrive the same, so no two lessons are the same.

Not sure it’s for you?

Two worries come up again and again, so let me answer both honestly:

“I’m too much of a beginner.” You’re not. There’s no group to keep up with and nothing to be embarrassed about — we start wherever you are and go at your pace. Beginners are exactly who one-to-one suits best.

“I probably already know enough.” Maybe — but if you’re here, part of you knows you’ve plateaued. A fresh, honest pair of eyes is often all it takes to get moving again, and experienced photographers tell me they wish they’d come sooner.

Trusted by photographers across the UK

A great one-to-one session… I’ve come away with a much clearer understanding of the theory behind the practice. Personalising my settings was really helpful. Would recommend to all.

— Mosie

A great teacher — a 1-2-1 session tailored to each individual. Worth every penny!

— Matt Nuttal

So helpful — tasks to improve my photography, detailed analysis of past photos, a practice session in the garden, and a mountain of advice plus handouts to take away. Professional, personable and extremely knowledgeable.

Private photography lessons — FAQs

Do I have to take the sessions every week or month?

No. Take them as and when you want, so you have time to practise and digest each session. Sessions often end with an agreed practice assignment to review and discuss next time. The only limit is to use all four within 12 months of purchase, so you keep your momentum and don’t end up covering old ground.

How many sessions do I actually need?

It depends what you’re after. If you want real, tangible progress — building skills that stick — the four-session package is the one to go for; it gives us time to teach, let you practise, and review. If you just need a quick fix — getting to grips with your camera’s settings, or fast-tracking one specific issue — a single pay-as-you-go session may be all you need.

How do I book my dates after buying the package?

Once you’ve purchased the £360 package, Alan emails you a link to his online diary to pick your dates and times. That email also includes a coupon code that bypasses the payment section in the scheduler — your sessions are already paid for.

Where do the lessons take place?

All lessons are held at Alan’s premises in Coventry (CV4 9HW), where there are plenty of resources on hand — large screens, a printer, and a range of camera equipment to use and demonstrate, plus access to woodland at the end of the garden for practical, on-location tuition as well as theory.

Can I have lessons in the evening or at weekends?

The 4-for-3 package is for daytime sessions, 9am–5pm Monday to Friday, as that’s when daytime availability is easiest — evenings are usually small-group classes and weekends are often location workshops. If you’d prefer an evening or weekend, there’s a pay-as-you-go option you can book whenever suits you, though the package discount doesn’t apply to those.

What level are the lessons suitable for?

Any level. The whole point of 1-2-1 tuition is that it’s bespoke — Alan assesses what you need and teaches accordingly, whether that’s camera technique, editing, lighting, composition, image reviews, or even building a photography business. Beginners and experienced photographers alike get sessions pitched exactly where they are.

What camera do I need?

You’ll need a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Lessons aren’t taught on phones, as the aim is to get you confident with full manual control of a dedicated camera.

Do I get any notes or materials to take away?

Yes. Depending on the subject, you’ll be given printed support notes or books and printed practice assignments. So as well as verbal and practical tuition, you leave each session with documented notes to refer back to and work on.

Can I try a single session before buying the package?

Yes — book a single pay-as-you-go session first if you’d like to try it. Note that a pay-as-you-go session is separate and won’t count as one of the four sessions in the 4-for-3 package.

What’s your cancellation and refund policy?

You can cancel within 30 days of purchase for a full refund, less a 5% admin charge. Once you’ve attended your first session, or after 30 days, no cancellation or refund is available. In exceptional circumstances — for example, serious illness preventing you from completing within 12 months — Alan may extend the 12-month window at his discretion to support you.

What happens in a typical session?

The first session usually starts with some fact-finding — your background, equipment, the things you’re struggling with and what you want to achieve — to produce an outline for the four sessions. That plan stays flexible: everyone learns at a different pace, so we can speed up, slow down, or add and drop topics as we go.
