Photography Workshop Event Details Suffolk
Description: This is a 3-day, 2-night residential Suffolk landscape photography workshop based on the Southwold and Aldeburgh coast, open to all levels from beginner to advanced. The Suffolk coastline is one of England's most photogenic and most varied — wide shoreline vistas, big skies, and a wealth of subjects most coastlines can't match: weathered piers, painted beach huts, iconic sea-defence structures and the traditional sails of Herringfleet Windmill. It's a landscape that rewards photographers who slow down and learn to see it.
The focus is on long exposure and the art of black and white photography — learning to compose a strong coastal frame, to use long exposures to smooth water and sky into mood, and to recognise when a scene works better in mono. It's about more than the technical craft, though: the real work is learning to see — composing with intention, working intimate detail as readily as the wide vista, and reading light and tone as a harmony rather than chasing the obvious shot. It's never prescriptive either: over three days and two to three locations a day — from Southwold and Walberswick to Dunwich, Orford and Aldeburgh — we work with whatever light and conditions the coast gives us, with early sunrise shoots, full days in the field with tuition, and evenings for relaxed picture reviews.
With a maximum of just four photographers and transport between locations included, this is genuinely personal, hassle-free tuition — Alan plans each day around the group, the season, the tides and the forecast, and sends a detailed location itinerary a few days ahead. En-suite accommodation and breakfast are included, so all you have to think about for three days is your photography. You'll come away with a portfolio of atmospheric Suffolk coastal images and a real grasp of long exposure and black and white technique. An extra night is available the day before on request, ideal for those travelling from a distance — contact me to arrange.

Suffolk Landscape Photography Workshop
Whilst this workshop is aimed at practising and learning long exposure and the art of black and white photography, this is not prescriptive, and we will discuss and explore various approaches and interpretations using the available light and conditions at the time.
We will be based near Southwold over the three days/two nights and visit 2-3 locations a day.
There will be a rich mixture of coastal shoreline vista to shoreline architecture including piers, beach huts and iconic sea defence structures. We will also visit Herringfleet Windmill for the more traditional structures and the shoreline facing the Sizewell nuclear power station.
The Suffolk coastline offers a wide variety of views and caters for all styles and ways of interpreting the land and seascapes.
