The Alan Ranger approach

Most teaching starts with the camera.
I start with seeing.

Settings are maybe 20% of a photograph. The other 80% is light, timing and composition — the part you can’t get from a YouTube tutorial. This course teaches you both: the full technical foundation and the eye that turns a snapshot into a photograph.

I’ve even talked my way into the Landscape Photographer of the Year book several times — highly commended, which I’m told is the polite way of saying “nearly won”.

Gear & accessories

10

Choosing lenses, tripods, filters and bags for the way you actually shoot, without wasting money on kit you don’t need.

Composition & creativity

10

The habits of seeing and creative choices that turn a snapshot into a photograph — framing, light, timing, balance, storytelling.

Photography genres

10

Landscape, portrait, macro, low-light and more — what each genre demands and how to approach it.

Practical assignments

15

Guided shoots that put every technique into your hands so it sticks — structured, with feedback loops built in.

YouTube vs a structured course

“YouTube is an ingredient. Not a curriculum.”

Five things a pile of videos can’t give you — no matter how good the videos are.

The gap
YouTube
The Academy
A sequence
The algorithm serves what keeps you watching, not what you need next.
60 modules ordered so foundations come before refinements.
Feedback on your photographs
A tutorial with 10 million views contains not one second of your photograph.
Practical assignments, image-review clinics and 1-to-1 sessions with Alan on your photographs.
A test that asks you to prove it
You watch, you feel like you’ve learned. Nothing ever asks you to do the thing.
30 exams and 2 master certificates — retrieval, not just recognition.
Progression — knowing where you are
No “you are here”. No “do this next”. Just an infinite buffet.
5 accreditation levels: Foundation → Practitioner → Certified → Graduate → Master.
Depth on seeing, not just settings
A library of technique. A histogram makes a good thumbnail; patience doesn’t.
Equal weight on light, timing and composition — the 80%.

Personal mentoring & formal RPS distinctions with Alan

£79 for the whole year is £6.58 a month — about £1.52 a week.

That covers all five badges — Foundation through Master for a full year: 60 modules, 30 exams and certificates plus 2 master certificates, 30 practice packs, 35 field checklists, a 741-page eBook, the full photographer toolkit, 40 Applied Learning scenarios, in-Academy RPS distinction prep guides and 24/7 Robo-Ranger AI — with direct message access to Alan, an ABIPP-qualified tutor. A single two-hour in-person photography lesson costs more than the entire annual Academy membership. Cancel any time from your dashboard; your progress, exam passes and certificates stay linked to your account either way. Optional add-on services (RPS Mentoring, monthly assignment mentoring, private 1-2-1 lessons with Alan) are available separately from day one, alongside any Academy plan — not included in the £79 membership.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best online photography course? +
The best online photography course depends on your goals, budget and timeframe. For a free, structured curriculum from a UK-based ABIPP-qualified tutor — with 60 modules, 30 exams, and a full five-badge progression from Foundation to Master — this Academy offers a 14-day free trial with no card required. For a shorter formally-accredited certificate, the Open University’s Digital Photography Course (10 weeks, £250, delivered in partnership with the RPS) is well-regarded. For phone-focused learning, iPhone Photography School specialises in smartphone technique. Choose by depth of curriculum, whether you want external accreditation, and your primary device.
Is the 14-day trial really free? Will I be charged anything? +
Yes, genuinely free. The trial is unlocked by a £0 Stripe checkout — this exists so we can attach the trial to your account and email, not to take payment. No card details are requested. If you do nothing at the end of the 14 days, you won’t be charged and the modules will simply lock until you choose to upgrade.
What happens after the 14 days end? +
Your access to the modules and exams pauses. You can upgrade to the full annual membership at £79/year to unlock everything permanently — including the downloads (practice packs, eBook, field checklists) that aren’t part of the trial. Your progress, bookmarks, exam results and certificates remain linked to your account so you can pick up exactly where you left off.
Is this course suitable for absolute beginners with no photography experience? +
Yes — it’s specifically designed for people starting from scratch. The Foundation stage begins with Module 01 Exposure, the single most important concept in photography, and every module that follows assumes no prior knowledge. You’ll be walked through camera settings, composition, light and genre choices step by step, with practical assignments to try each idea in the real world. If you can hold a camera or a phone, you can do this.
What if I’m already fairly experienced — will the content be too basic? +
Not if you engage with the whole Academy rather than just the early camera-settings modules. Beyond the basics you unlock 40 Applied Learning scenarios covering real-world shooting situations, 10 composition and creativity guides on the parts YouTube tends to skip (light, timing, edges, intent), 15 practical assignments to test yourself against, and the five-badge progression from Foundation through to Master with 30 exams and 2 master certificates. If you want external recognition, the in-Academy RPS distinction prep guides you toward LRPS, ARPS and FRPS submissions. There’s plenty here to stretch someone with existing skills.
Do I need an expensive camera to do the course? +
No. Any camera works — a DSLR, a mirrorless, a compact, or a modern phone. Several modules explicitly cover phone photography. A tripod and a spare battery help on a few of the practical assignments but they’re optional. The course teaches the principles, not the gear.
How long does each module take? +
Most modules take 8–15 minutes to read, with optional deeper material if you want to go further. The complete 60-module course is roughly 10 hours of reading. Practical assignments are designed to be done over a weekend or on your next walk.
Can I use the Academy on my phone and tablet as well as on a desktop? +
Yes — the Academy works on any device. That said, a desktop or laptop will give you the best experience: modules are text and image heavy and much easier to read and digest on a larger screen, and marking up your own images or downloading practice packs and field checklists is more comfortable there too. Phone access is genuinely useful for quick module reads, checking field checklists on location, or asking Robo-Ranger AI a question mid-shoot.
Will I get a certificate? +
Yes — downloadable certificates for each of the 30 exams you pass, plus 2 master certificates when you complete the whole Academy. Certificates carry your name and the date passed. They are not formally accredited qualifications but they are recognised markers of structured learning — useful for portfolio and camera-club applications.
Can I get direct help from you if I’m stuck? +
Yes, in three ways. Every module has help notes for common questions built in. Robo-Ranger AI is available 24/7 for on-demand answers about anything in the course. And you get direct-message Q&A access to me as a paid member — I answer photography questions personally. If you want a proper conversation, a private 1-2-1 Zoom session with me is available as a separate paid add-on whenever you need one.
Do you offer refunds on the annual membership? +
No — the £79 annual isn’t refundable. That’s what the 14-day trial exists for: you can go through every module and exam before paying anything, so committing to the annual should feel like a fully informed decision. Once you upgrade, the twelve months of access are yours to use however you like — work through it in a month or spread it across the year — but access runs out at renewal.
