Photography masterclasses — FAQs

What exactly is a masterclass?

A focused 2-hour session on one specific photography topic. It combines theory, the camera and software settings that matter, editing, a practical element where the topic allows, and personal image review and feedback — so you leave with a real, working grasp of that subject.

What level are they aimed at?

Any level. They work well for beginners wanting to go deeper than an intro class, and for more experienced photographers using them as a refresher. If you're unsure whether a particular topic suits you, just get in touch and ask.

Are they in person or online?

Both. Masterclasses run as evening classes (19:00–21:15) at Alan's studio in Coventry, and also live online via Zoom. You can also take any topic as a 1-2-1 private lesson on a weekday daytime.

How much do they cost?

Masterclasses start from £35 for a 2-hour session. The exact price is shown on the booking block for each date.

How is this different from the Academy?

A masterclass is a single live session on one topic. The Academy is a self-paced online membership covering everything — 60 modules, 15 exams and 15 assignments — for £79/year, with a free 14-day trial. Many people take a masterclass on a pressing topic and use the Academy to cover the rest at their own pace.

Do I need an expensive camera?

No. Any camera with manual controls is fine, and most topics apply whatever you shoot with. Bring the camera you actually use so the settings guidance is relevant to you.

Can I take more than one?

Yes — each masterclass covers different material, so you can book as many topics as you like over time. They're designed to build your skills topic by topic.

What if no dates are listed for the topic I want?

Masterclasses run on a cycle, so topics rotate. If your topic isn't currently scheduled, take it as a 1-2-1 private lesson, or contact Alan to be told when the next date is set.

Can I use a gift voucher?

Yes. Gift vouchers can be put towards any masterclass — a good option if you're buying for someone else.

Pick a topic, or take the whole path

If there's one subject you want to nail — exposure, composition, a particular genre — book a 2-hour masterclass and go deep on it, in Coventry or online. If you'd rather work through everything at your own pace, start the Academy's free 14-day trial and climb the full path for £79 a year. Either way, you're learning from a qualified professional who explains the 'why', not just the 'how'.
