Help Portrait - Sponsor a Homeless Person's Portrait This Christmas

Homelessness is sadly still a big issue.  We live in the 21st century, yet homelessness has continued to increase.  According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, homeless rose 32% between 2010 and 2016 in England.

The simple facts are that local councils are struggling to house people as social tenancies dwindle, the private sector rents have increased dramatically and demand outstrips supply, the crisis in social care has led to more people finding themselves out of social care and young people (25-34) in particular struggle to find affordable housing.

Loss of a private tenancy accounted for 31% of those accepted as homeless in England and drastic changes to housing and other benefits with the roll-out of universal credit will only make the crisis deepen.

It will take serious government intervention and short-term relief and long-term investment to turn the tide of this shameful reality in the UK, the worlds 5th biggest economy.

Help-Portrait is an international movement of photographers, hair and makeup stylists and supporters who every year on the first or second Saturday in December, all over the world hold a Help-Portrait Day;

1. Find someone in need
2. Take their portrait
3. Print their portrait and
4. Deliver their portrait.

The idea is that a photographer has the unique ability to help someone smile, laugh and return their dignity. It is a movement, a shift in photography.  It's not about taking pictures, it's about giving pictures.

Sponsor a Help-Portrait for a homeless person in Coventry on Dec 2nd

We are aiming to provide hair and makeup styling and give 75 homeless people from Coventry a professionally taken/printed portrait.  Working with Crisis Skylight Coventry and Warwickshire and the Salvation Army we will be running a professional hair, styling and photography centre for the homeless to enjoy an experience that is not affordable to them.

Along the way, we hope to provide a friendly environment, listen, laugh, love and give a homeless person some dignity back, a great experience and the gift of friendship and support and something memorable to take away with them.

You can help too - as part of the project, we would like to raise £1,000 for Crisis to support homeless people.

We are seeking donations;

  • £10.00 (Provides a warm welcome and helps someone take the first steps out of homelessness)

  • £25.00 (Helps someone regain a sense of worth through healthcare and counselling)

  • £50.00 (Helps someone gain the skills or qualifications they need to turn their life around)

  • £100.00 (Provides support, training and equipment to help someone find their way back into employment)
