Lake District Workshop Report March 2019

A return to a spiritual home

The Lake District is probably the location that turned my love of the outdoors into a love with photography and the outdoors. Fifteen or so years ago I made my first trip, purely for photographic reasons, to Cumbria and remember coming back and knowing it was place I would return many more times to photograph in the future. The variety of subjects in the landscape, the amount of locations in close proximity and just the general moody atmospheric scenes meant I knew I would be hooked for life.

I was right, I have returned there several times a year ever since. The Lake District always throws up opportunities with changeable weather and some of the best landscape photography vista’s and cameo shots for nine months of the year - I never visit June, July or August (too many tourists and blue skies!)

A stormy weekend

This latest trip, two weeks ago was, I think I am right in saying, the wettest day of the year (so far) with nearly a month’s rainfall in one day on Saturday 16th March. However, given the stormy conditions and therefore chance to photograph between the storms when the light can be at its best we were not deterred from continuing with the three day photography workshop.

Unfortunately the forecasts were correct in the main. Friday was fine if you can adapt to strong winds, hailstones and sleet. Saturday was as forecast, wall to wall rain from 2 am to 7 pm, which meant we had a whole day at the hotel doing photo editing tuition in Lightroom and NIK and Sunday was bright sunshine between periods of rain and snow.

The weekend was great and was made extra enjoyable by two great clients who entered into the spirit of cold conditions and provided great company throughout our time together.

Lots of variety

Below is a sample of the images and locations covered over the weekend.  I am sure you will agree that there is a great deal of variety of subjects, lighting and opportunity for all interests and levels of photographer.

If you are interested in the next Lake District Workshop, please contact me to see how you can join in the for the whole weekend or just on a day workshop.
