Free Photo Competition - Win $3000

Hi all - As some of you know I will be running a number of photography workshops at The International Festival of Photography at Sharjah, UAE in October this year. In addition I am also one of the judges on the panel for the photo competition. See below for details and categories....

I can confirm that to date the quality of entries has been less than impressive so this is a shout out to all my photography friends and acquaintances to say you really should enter some images - I will obviously abstain from voting on any work/names I recognise but there are 8 other judges so please put your work forward. It's free to enter and there are some great prizes.

In each category judges will award:

Competition Categories

Photojournalism

Representational photography, which provides a documentary visual account of specific subjects and events, literally re-presenting objective reality. Open to all published photojournalism and documentary projects, in addition to personal documentary projects.

Current Affairs

Open to all reportage and editorial work in the style of news reporting. This work must not be manipulated or have altered pixels. Colour, Contrast, and adjustments to levels are permitted.

Landscapes

Showing spaces within the world. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. Open to all personal work and commissioned magazine or editorial work. Personal work in the style of editorial photography should be entered in the Personal category. Please do not submit tear sheets.

Street Photography

Featuring the chance encounters, activities and random accidents within public places. Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. People should feature directly or indirectly, as an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character.

Fine Art

Fine art photography is photography created in accordance with the vision of the artist as photographer. You need to write that artist statement. It needs to be written in what is known as artspeak, or language that fits in with the art world.

Camera Phone

The Junior category is open to all types of still photography recorded by a phone camera and produced at a Junior level (must be under 14 to enter). Photos must have been taken in the period between 1st October 2015 and 30th September 2016.

Creative Content

This Junior category is open to all creative and conceptual still photography produced at a Junior level ( must be under 14 to enter ). Photos include projects such as annual reports, catalogs, calendars, marketing work and non-profit commissions for corporate brands.

Competition Awards

The panel of judges are looking to award the overall best image and best in class images from the 6 categories; Photojournalism, Current Affairs, Landscape, Street Photography, Best of Show and Fine Art.

In addition to the main prizes, all winning and shortlisted photographers will be included in the publication of the Xposure 2016 annual and featured in a gallery at Xposure 2017.

Xposure Photography Festival

How to enter

Please submit images that are suitable for printing in Xposure Magazine. The preferred size is 42x28cm @ 300 dpi jpeg with either Adobe 1998, sRGB colour profiles but can be smaller.

The recommended image size should be close to 5,000 pixels on the longer dimension. We can accept images that were not captured at this resolution as long as they are between 3,300-5,000 pixels on the long dimension. For more information on electronic submission guidelines see our FAQ.


To enter electronically, please visit xposure.ae/competitions to register. Once the registration process has been completed, you will receive an e-mail confirmation. Simply log onto the website and follow the online instructions to upload images from your computer. Digital images should have a long dimension of at least 3,300 pixels and be saved at 300 dpi 28cm or larger as a jpeg. We recommend the uncompressed file size not be larger than 5 megabytes to ensure a fast upload experience.

We can accept images that up to 8 megabytes (uncompressed) if you do not have the ability to downsize the images. (Uncompressed is the size you see in Photoshop’s “Image Size” display which represents the count of pixels in the image. It is not the file size on your computer’s hard drive viewable on your desktop.) Images may be colour profiled in sRGB, Adobe-1998, or not colour-managed.


You may enter up to ten images per user distributed in any ration across the competition categories. but each entry must clearly state the category for which it is submitted. (see categories)

To qualify, photographs must be taken, published or produced since June 30 2013.
An entry consists of one photo, in addition to completed data fields.


Each submitted photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the competition entrant. By entering the contest, the entrant represents, acknowledges and warrants that he or she has full power and authority to enter the photograph, and that the photograph does not infringe any copyright or violate any other intellectual property rights. The entrant agrees to indemnify Sharjah Media Centre from any and all third party claims arising from the photograph.


Photographs that include sculptures, statues, paintings, and other works of art will be accepted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement or fraud, provided that entrants are prepared to provide a release form as described below in “Third Party Releases/Licenses.” When photographing the work of others, it must be as an object in its environment and not a full-frame close up of another person’s art.


The entries will be judged in accordance with the Judging Criteria, as defined below. The photograph must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the Sponsors, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. Photographs deemed inappropriate will be disqualified.


On-line entries must be made by user registered online at https://xposure.awardsplatform.com and the authorised account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry. “Authorised account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, internet domain owner, or other person or organisation (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.
