Dee Valley - North Wales Photography Workshop Report
Landscape Workshop in North East Wales
Wales is great for big vista shots with its rolling hills, valleys and countryside views. The latest weekend workshop was held in the Ceiriog Valley, 30 mins from Llangollen in the north and Pistyll Rhaeadr in the south.
Based at The West Arms, Llanarmon Dyffryn-Ceiriog with the best hosts, Mark and Nicky, I have encountered in ten years of staying away for a weekend workshop. We were provided excellent facilities with a separate large, well-lit room, open fire, tables, screen, sofas to meet in and conduct image reviews, briefings and tuition when not out shooting on location. The food and rooms were also first class so, I definitely recommend a stay there for whatever purpose you are visiting the area. Speak to Mark or Nicky and mention you are a client of mine to get discounted room rate.
As for the photography, the immediate area around Ceiriog was new to me but Nicky had kindly arranged a local, very talented, artist, Rosie, to meet me on arrival and give some helpful insight into nearby locations for our sunrise shoots. That advice turned out to be invaluable given we were out before any visible light on narrow country lanes looking for potential vista shots. We photographed some lovely views with low cloud, creating a blanket white backdrop to the trees across the hills, and as that lifted, we saw glimpses of sunlight and a small amount of warm colour across the valley.
I am currently arranging a further visit, solo, to meet up with the local farmer and others who can take me to woodlands and other areas of interest. I can then expand the local itinerary and include a wider choice of location and environments for next time. Watch this space, I will provide details and dates of the next workshop there, once I have finalised some more details and locations.
A big thank you to the four participants over the three days. Each participant had different levels of experience and knowledge. I was pleased to be able to provide 1-2-1 tuition based on camera settings, white balance, depth of field, using slow shutter speed, filters, composition, framing and any aspect of digital photography that helped clients explore, develop and improve.
All the participants enjoyed the variety of locations that included everything from a railway station with steam locomotives, to an aqueduct, castle ruins, ancient woodlands, rivers, waterfalls, cameo shots isolating subjects, movement and abstract shots and big vista shots.
