A day with Derek
Derek made contact with me a few weeks back asking a whole range of questions covering technical and creative aspects of photography. After some discussion we agreed that the best way I could assist him was on a 1-2-1 private photography tuition session.
Derek took advantage of the 30% off for a day in August offer and we were scheduled.
Derek's day is a great example of how you can mix and match what you want to cover on a private photography tuition booking with me.
"I had been having problems in obtaining sharp images and felt that only hands on help would solve my problem, I therefore signed up for a 1-2-1 full day session."
The day was split up into different sections to:
Go through the camera settings on Derek's camera to make sure it was set-up correctly
Clean the camera sensor to remove dust spots
Calibrate and adjust two of his lenses for focusing accuracy
Test and compare 5 lenses for sharpness and detail
A photo walk around Kenilworth
Post processing and editing of Derek's photos in Lightroom
Armed with just a camera and lens, no tripods or specialist gear we worked our way across Kenilworth possibly hoping for divine intervention on what we were presented with to photograph.
Derek expressed a preference for travel photography which after some discussion highlighted that this could mean anything and everything from portraits, still life, landscapes, architecture, abstract or just about any genre of photography you can think of.
During a 2.5hr photo walk we covered a diverse range of photographic genres, techniques and styles.
"During this time I was able to call upon Alan's expertise and hopefully many of my problems will have been corrected."
We spent the morning working through settings on the camera, what they mean and importantly how to use them.
After doing another of tests with lenses and focusing I was able to teach Derek some better techniques for operating his camera to get more consistent results.
Armed with this knowledge Derek wanted to try out the techniques and settings we had discussed, so we took a 2.5hr photo walk in nearby Kenilworth not knowing what we would come across.
"I am not really into Landscape photography and much prefer Street/Urban shooting. As a result we spent part of the day shooting in Kenilworth town centre and later on visited the Castle."
With this brief in mind, I was able to show and help Derek get a wide range of different shots that cover the range of most genres of people visiting places.
Moving away from the street market we walked down to the castle ruins in glorious sunshine and wonderful clouds.
"The day was very worthwhile and I learned much which will improve my photography.
I would therefore recommend a 1-2-1 to anyone who wishes to improve their photography and I am sure you will benefit from such personal tuition"
Finally we spent some time going through the basic editing adjustments to photos, using Adode Lightroom. We then used some of the shots taken to discuss and learn how to convert from colour into Black and White.
