A day out - mentoring assignment

The monthly mentoring program assignment for students was "A Day Out"

The main challenge for this assignment was to create/capture 3 images that would be viewed together as a panel of work.  The images in the panel therefore needed to tell a story of the day, connecting one image to the next and keeping subject/content consistent and colour, tone, perspective balanced between all 3 images.

This sounds simple enough in principle but the reality is much harder.  To get 3 images that fulfill that objective means taking many more than 3 images and planning your shots beforehand.  I am pleased to be able to share with you some of what I thought were the best examples of this and shows how the mentoring students are really applying all their creative and technical skills together to produce good quality work in ways they hadn't put together before.

Well done for everyone who attempted this difficult assignment and a big pat on the back to those below for creating what I think are excellent panels.

Chris Shaw - an excellent panel of 3 image showing a connecting theme, well executed compositions which are tight and all aerial views and freezing the moving action in each.

Mike Ford - a great sequence of images that tell a story of a day hiking.  Carefully composed images that each show part of the day and are really well put together.

Howard Allen - I love the sequence here showing the warm up, actual run and the final collapse of exhaustion at the end.  The simple use of green tones throughout and consistent subject content make this panel work really well.

Laura Franklin - Another good panel that tells us a story of Laura's normal view walking behind Steve.  The colour and subject consistency shows how this works well and even the switching of orientation in the middle image feels balanced next to the other two frames.
